If you’ve been around the alkaline vegan community at all in the past few years, you’ve more than likely seen a post about sea moss and its energy-boosting benefits.
But does this superfood really deliver? We did some digging to find out. Keep reading to learn what we found out about sea moss and its energy-boosting benefits.
Does Sea Moss Give You Energy?
You might be wondering how a seaweed like sea moss can give you energy. After all, many people claim it does give energy.
Sea moss is actually packed with nutrients that can have a big impact on your energy levels. For one thing, sea moss is a good source of Iron. Iron helps increase blood circulation and oxygenation. This can help combat fatigue by providing more oxygen and nutrients to your cells. Therefore, it’s possible that sea moss could help increase energy levels by improving oxygenation.
Sea moss also contains iodine, which is essential for proper thyroid function. Thyroid hormones play a major role in regulating metabolism, so getting enough iodine can help to keep your energy levels steadier throughout the day.
Why Does Sea Moss Help With Energy?
Some people believe that sea moss can help with energy levels, due to its high mineral content – notably Iron, magnesium and Iodine. Its high iron content helps with the production of red blood cells, which carry oxygen to the body’s tissues. By improving oxygenation, sea moss could help increase energy levels.
Sea moss is also a good source of magnesium, another mineral that is involved in energy metabolism. Magnesium has been linked to less tiredness and fatigue. It’s an important mineral involved in making enzymes, processing and transporting nutrients. Magnesium also helps in converting stored glucose into energy.
Iodine, which is also found abundantly in sea moss may play a major role for energy production. Iodine is responsible for making thyroid hormones – and these thyroid hormones play a major role in regulating metabolism. With proper regulation of the body’s metabolic processes, energy is improved and sustained. So getting enough iodine can help to keep your energy levels steadier throughout the day.
As a result, getting enough sea moss which contains about 10% of the Daily Value (DV) of Iron, 7% of the DV of magnesium may be useful in helping keep energy levels stable, while preventing the onset of tiredness.
Back in 2017, I was feeling so exhausted that I decided to do some research on whether or not sea moss could give me energy. Turns out, there were a lot of people who believe in the energizing effects of this seaweed. So, I decided to give it a try.
Luckily, I found a recipe for making a sea moss drink and gave it a go. The instructions were simple enough: mix 1 tablespoon of sea moss gel in 1 cup of fresh homemade juice. I got home and put it in my smoothie, but I wasn’t sure if it was actually doing anything. I added agave, and key lime juice to make it more palatable.
The taste wasn’t bad, but it was definitely different than other seaweeds I’d ever had before. But that was the first time, and how did I feel? That very first moment, I really didn’t feel any difference.
Although, I was out running errands that day, and started feeling a bit tired. I thought maybe the sea moss wasn’t working for me after all.
But I kept drinking it – day 1, day 2, day 3 and then oh boi, did I really began to feel the blast. Suddenly, I had a burst of energy and felt like I could keep going! Absolutely like a fly.
It turns out that the sea moss actually did boost my energy levels. From that day, I made sure to have my sea moss at least every other day. Although nowadays, I could go on for days with great energy even without sea moss.
How Does Sea Moss Make You Feel?
As anyone who’s ever taken a sip of sea moss can attest, it doesn’t exactly have the best reputation when it comes to taste. But most people who eat it seem to feel amazing. Some people say it makes them stronger, faster, and smarter. Others say it gives them better vision, hearing, and sense of smell.
That notwithstanding, how can sea moss make you feel?
Sea moss can actually make you feel full of energy, motivated and alert. In fact, many people take sea moss first thing in the money for that extra boost of energy that powers their day. Nonetheless, some people may feel lethargic, sleepy or dizzy after consuming sea moss.
Here are just a few ways that sea moss can make you feel:
- You feel more energized: The high mineral content in sea moss helps to regulate metabolism and even thyroid function, helping to give you more energy.
- You feel more mentally alert: The iodine in sea moss helps to improve cognitive function and increase focus.
- You feel better Digestion: Sea moss is a natural source of fiber and prebiotics, which help to promote gut health and improve digestion.
- You feel more hydrated: Sea moss is often taken with water or high water juices, teas and smoothies. So, it’s no wonder that it can help to keep you hydrated. The mineral content also helps to regulate fluid and electrolytes levels in the body.
- You feel calmer: The magnesium and calcium in sea moss have calming effects on the nervous system, helping to reduce anxiety and chronic stress.
Sea Moss Energy Benefits: How Does It Compare?
Sea moss is supposedly a superfood that gives you tons of energy. Aside my personal case study, we were curious, so we decided to do a little experiment.
We’d heard that it was a natural energy booster, and we were eager to put it to the test. So, one day, we decided to do some research on the topic. I found that there’s actually quite a bit of research out there on sea moss and its potential benefits, and while some studies suggest that sea moss can help improve energy levels, others suggest that it may be contradictory.
So, what did we do? We decided to put sea moss to the test. We gathered a few participants (about 28 in total) and tested it out for ourselves. In as much as this experiment may be somewhat limited due to its small sample size, it was worth it.
We took two groups of people (14 each) and had the first group (labelled Group A) eat 1 tbsp sea moss (gel) in 1 cup spring water daily. And the other group (Group B) was given plain spring water. We monitored both groups over the course of 2 weeks. The results were surprising.
Almost half of the members of Group A reported feeling more energetic and alert at the end of the 2 weeks. About 43% of the group that had taken the sea moss gel reported significantly improved energy levels. While 2 members representing 12.5% didn’t report any difference in energy levels or other benefits at all.
In Group B, ten members (62.5%) reported no difference in energy levels or other benefits at all.
From this experiment, it is possible sea moss may actually be great for that boost of energy. Although, the experiment may be limited by small sample size, it may be worth mentioning overall.
How Does Sea Moss Give You Energy?
Most people are familiar with the feeling of fatigue. Whether it’s the result of a long day at work or a lack of sleep, fatigue can leave us feeling dragging and unable to focus. Thankfully, sea moss could be a natural way to combat fatigue and give ourselves a much-needed energy boost.
So, how does Sea Moss give you energy? It is thought to work by replenishing electrolytes and minerals that are lost through sweating. Furthermore, sea moss contains compounds like iodine and iron that can help to increase energy levels.
Irish sea moss has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for everything from energy to joint pain. Sea moss contains high levels of iodine, which is necessary for thyroid health, and other minerals like magnesium, potassium, and zinc.
Despite its purported health benefits, there is little scientific evidence to support the use of sea moss as an energy booster or joint pain reliever.
Sea moss can be a healthy addition to your diet if you are looking for ways to increase your intake of iodine and other minerals. However, it is not a cure all for every ailment, and you should consult with your doctor before using it to treat any medical condition.
