Many of us have heard the claims that sea moss contains 92 of the 102 minerals that make up the human body. It is well-established that sea moss does indeed contain many of these important minerals, in addition to many vitamins and nutrients.

But what exactly are the minerals in sea moss and what minerals are missing from sea moss?

In this article, you will learn more precise details when it comes to the mineral content of the useful sea plant everyone is raving about.

Does sea moss have minerals?

Sea moss definitely contains a wide array of minerals, but mineral content will naturally vary from plant to plant.

Just as with everything else in nature, the exact mineral content depends on many variables such as soil or water conditions, sun exposure, and other environmental factors.

What is known is that sea moss contains a large amount of minerals essential to health.

How many minerals does sea moss contain?

While the exact amount of minerals may vary from plant to plant, it is thought that on average sea moss contains around 92 minerals.

Sea moss harvested from the open ocean (as opposed to being farmed in pools) will contain more minerals because the ocean naturally provides it with an abundance of minerals.

What Minerals does sea moss contain?

Sea moss contains some crucial minerals for human health, such as iron, copper, manganese, magnesium, iodine, zinc, potassium, and selenium.

These are among some of the most important minerals that help the organs function properly.  Iron is necessary for oxygen transport in the blood, copper helps make red blood cells, as well as maintains nerve cells and the immune system.

Manganese helps with blood clotting and homeostasis.  Magnesium is necessary for the formation of bones and teeth, as well as healthy nerve and muscle function. Iodine is a mineral that the body cannot make itself and relies on diet to obtain this critical mineral.  It helps support healthy thyroid function.

Zinc is responsible for many components of cellular metabolism, as well as immune function, growth, and proper development.

Potassium is a necessary mineral that helps regulate the heartbeat, ensures proper function of the muscles and nerves, and is critical for synthesizing protein and metabolizing carbohydrates.

Selenium is a mineral that has many jobs in the body.  It plays an important role in reproduction, thyroid hormone metabolism, DNA synthesis, and protection from oxidative damage and infection.

Of course, sea moss contains many more minerals, but the fact that it contains these crucial minerals is why it is such a popular supplement.

List of 10 minerals missing in sea moss

The list of ten minerals missing from sea moss is thulium, tin, titanium, tungsten, uranium, vanadium, xenon, ytterbium, yttrium, and zirconium.

If you have never heard of these minerals, that is because they are very obscure and uncommon. Some are not even necessary for human health and many in fact have adverse effects on human health.

The fact that sea moss doesn’t contain most of these minerals tells a lot. It is actually a good thing. Missing minerals like uranium is potentially toxic to the kidneys if ingested.

Missing Sea Moss MineralsFunctions
1thuliumvery toxic, no beneficial role in the human body
2tinlittle nerve function; may be potentially toxic in large amounts; only 5% absorbed in the intestine
3titaniumnon-toxic; no known biological role in the human body
4tungstenheaviest mineral with known biological role; rapidly eliminated from the body through faeces and urine
5uraniumtoxic to humans at high amounts, no known biological importance
6vanadiumlowers serum glucose; aids growth of cells; aids in formation of bones, teeth and cartilage
7xenonorgan protective; anaesthetic agent
8ytterbiumno known biological role
9yttriumno known biological role
10zirconiumno known biological role

102 Minerals found in the human body *bolded minerals are not found in sea moss

It is important to note that just because these minerals are listed as making up the human body, the exact amounts of some of the minerals in the list may vary, with some being extremely small amounts that are nearly undetectable.

It is this balance of necessary and unnecessary minerals that make us what we are. Some minerals, such as zinc, copper, manganese, magnesium, iron, potassium, selenium, and iodine are extremely important to human health and the healthy function of our organs and cells.

Other minerals are not as well-known because they aren’t as important for our health and wellbeing.  We have to rely on our diet to get the proper amount of some minerals. While some other minerals are only required in very small amounts.  These are called “trace minerals.”

As more research is conducted to see exactly what nutrients are in sea moss, we will likely learn much more about this intriguing seaweed.

What is known today is that it provides the body with a dense amount of nutrients needed to be healthy and nourished.

Final Notes

Sea moss is a versatile plant that has many health benefits. It contains high levels of essential minerals, but there are 10 minerals that are typically missing from sea moss.

In this article, we’ve listed the 10 minerals missing in sea moss, along with the minerals found in sea moss and the human body. These missing minerals are somewhat not that important and may even be potentially toxic as we’ve learned.

If you’re looking for a comprehensive mineral supplement, sea moss could be very helpful.

This is usually a standard routine to combine sea moss with bladderwrack to make up for the shortfall of the missing good minerals. Bladderwrack contains some of the missing minerals in sea moss.
